My Go to Stress Relief Activities

My Go-To Stress Relief Activities as a High Schooler

High school can be a lot sometimes.

Between homework, tests, sports, friendships, and just figuring out who I am, I’ve definitely had my share of stressful days.

Over time, I’ve learned that taking care of my mental health is just as important as studying for a big exam or showing up for practice.

When life starts to feel overwhelming, I have a handful of activities that help me relax and reset.

These aren’t complicated or expensive—just simple things that make a big difference.

Listening to Music

Music is always my first go-to when I’m stressed.

Whether it’s during a study break, while I’m lying in bed at night, or even on the ride home, plugging in my headphones instantly makes the world feel less loud.

Sometimes I’ll pick upbeat songs that make me want to dance around my room, and other times I’ll go for something slower and calming, especially if I’ve had a tough day.

It’s crazy how just hearing a favorite song can completely shift my mood.

Listening to music reminds me that even on bad days, there’s always something that can make me smile.

Reading a Good Book

Another way I unwind is by reading.

I know not everyone my age loves reading outside of school, but for me, it’s like a mini-vacation for my mind.

When I’m stressed about something at school or just feeling down, getting lost in a story helps me escape for a while.

Whether it’s a funny contemporary novel, a fantasy series full of adventure, or even an inspiring biography, reading lets me step into someone else’s world and forget about my worries.

Plus, it’s a quiet activity I can do anywhere—curled up in my bed, sitting outside, or even in the library when I need a break.

Watching My Favorite Show

Sometimes, all I need is to turn my brain off for a little bit and watch something I love.

Watching my favorite show is like catching up with old friends—I know the characters, I know the jokes, and it’s comforting in a way.

On especially stressful days, I’ll grab a blanket, some snacks, and let myself binge a couple of episodes guilt-free.

It’s not just about being entertained—it’s about giving myself permission to pause and enjoy something simple.

Going for Walks

One of the most underrated things that helps me relieve stress is going for walks.

There’s something about stepping outside, breathing fresh air, and moving my body that makes everything feel lighter.

Even if I don’t go far—just around my neighborhood or the school track—walking clears my head in a way nothing else can.

I’ll sometimes listen to music or a podcast while I walk, or I’ll leave my phone behind and just focus on the sounds around me.

It’s like hitting the reset button on my day.

Why These Activities Matter

The truth is, stress is going to be a part of life, especially as a high schooler trying to juggle a million things.

But I’ve realized I don’t have to let it control me.

Taking time for myself—whether it’s through music, books, TV shows, or a simple walk—reminds me that I’m allowed to slow down.

These little habits make me feel more like myself again and help me come back to my responsibilities with a clearer, calmer mindset.

I’ve also noticed that when I take care of my mental health, I’m actually better at handling everything else.

Homework doesn’t feel as impossible, arguments with friends don’t seem as dramatic, and even my mood at home improves.

It’s like giving my brain a break makes everything else fall into place a little easier.

Finding What Works for You

If you’re a fellow teen or just someone dealing with stress, I really recommend finding your own go-to activities.

It doesn’t have to be the same things I do.

Maybe it’s drawing, baking, playing a sport, or even just sitting outside and watching the sunset.

The important thing is to figure out what makes you feel grounded and happy.

For me, it’s music, reading, watching my favorite shows, and walks—but for you, it might be something totally different.

At the end of the day, high school isn’t just about grades or achievements—it’s also about learning how to take care of yourself.

Stress relief isn’t a luxury; it’s necessary.

And while life can definitely get overwhelming, I’ve learned that small, simple things can make a huge difference.

So, the next time you’re feeling the pressure build up, don’t be afraid to grab your headphones, pick up a book, or head outside for a walk.

It might seem small, but it really can change your whole day.
